MEGGITT TO PRESENT RESEARCH PAPER AT 2009 ILEETA CONFERENCE

Independent research study explores influence of stress factors during virtual training to create effective judgmental scenarios

April 20, 2009, Suwanee, GA - Meggitt Training Systems Inc. (MTSI) will present a research study abstract exploring stress and virtual training scenarios at the ILEETA (International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association) Conference and Expo in Wheeling, IL on April 21, 2009. William Bunnell, Program Manager, MTSI and Randall Murphy, Director of Research, MTSI, in conjunction with Dr. Darrell Ross, Western Illinois University, will provide an overview of the study and its findings, which emphasize the need for the simulation industry to produce stress in a virtual environment, thus developing more immersive and effective training courseware for law enforcement officers.

Referred to as the Human Factors Research Study, testing was conducted by Western Illinois University and the University of South Florida leveraging PhDs in Psychology, Performance Psychology, Cardiology, Memory, Psychoneuroendocrineology and experts in the fields of Immunology & Criminology. The study involved various methods for elevating stress levels during video scenarios while measuring law enforcement officers' physiological and psychological responses to training courseware during critical incidents.

Findings dictate that physiological and psychological performance by police officers in a virtual training environment are affected by the introduction of stress during virtual training scenarios. This results in increased interactivity during training and a training environment that is truly immersive and tactically sound.

The study is the largest of its kind to date, consisting of 150 certified law enforcement officers across five police departments. Testing reviewed over 1600 metrics for impact on sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system responses, including physical ability and memory and cognition as indicated through biometrics, recall and observation. The Human Factors research also marks the first study to utilize survival factors and primal fears to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system and is the largest study to examine the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system in a training environment.

"We are excited to bring the findings of this study to the audience at the ILEETA Conference," comments Bill Bunnell, Program Manager, MTSI. "Training officers will gain a better understanding of the research that is helping to drive better courseware, as well as gaining insight into modern training techniques that help improve proper reactions of officers. By pioneering the Human Factors study and adapting its findings to product development, Meggitt maintains its position as the leader in virtual courseware for the law enforcement industry."

MEGGITT SPONSORS ILEETA CUP SHOOTING COMPETITION FOR THIRD YEAR

April 9, 2009, Suwanee, GA - For the third year running, Meggitt Training Systems Inc. (MTSI) will sponsor the ILEETA (International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association) Cup Shooting Competition held at the ILEETA International Training Conference and Expo in Wheeling, IL on April 21, 2009. Instructors from around the world will come together to compete in this event and all funds raised from this program will be divided evenly between the ILEETA Scholarship Fund and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

The competition utilizes two of Meggitt's leading training systems - the Road Range™ mobile live-fire range and Meggitt's new portable virtual training system - making the competition the only international police shooting competition that uses both live-fire and virtual simulators.

The live-fire portion of the ILEETA Cup takes place in the Road Range™. This self-contained mobile firearms training facility provides all the features of an indoor range in a deployable environment (it is easily transported for use at dispersed sites or placed in a permanent location). The ballistically secure trailer is equipped with advanced ventilation systems, bullet traps and targetry to produce a three lane live-fire range.

The virtual portion of the ILEETA Cup utilizes Meggitt's portable virtual training system. This compact law enforcement simulator offers fully-immersive, interactive video scenarios to enhance judgmental and marksmanship training. The simulator has received much acclaim for its user-friendly interface that reduces instructor training time as well as its portable design that weighs less than 55lbs. Officers can experience firsthand the system's flexible firearms platform, which supports Meggitt's BlueFire® wireless weapons and system controlled tethered and Dvorak (laser insert) firearms.

As the official sponsor of this event, Meggitt Training Systems supports ILEETA's mission of saving lives through the development and delivery of high quality training aids. The event also honors those individuals who paid the ultimate price to protect their communities.

"The support and involvement of Meggitt Training Systems is essential to the success of this event" says Ed Nowicki, Executive Director.

The ILEETA Cup is evaluated by third-party certified judges and computer scoring on both portions of the competition. The winner is determined by adding up the total "hot factor" (total score divided by time). The goal is to be the faster shooter with the highest score on each round. The competition has an overall winner, but also has first through third place winners in three different age groups (21-34, 35-49 and 50+).

MEGGITT AWARDED $5 MILLION TRAINING SYSTEMS UPGRADE

16 March 2009, Suwanee, GA - Meggitt Training Systems Inc (MTSI) has been awarded a contract worth approximately $5 million from the US Army National Guard (ARNG) for enhancements to existing virtual small-arms trainers. Designed and manufactured by Meggitt, the simulators have been used successfully for over 12 years and continue to meet ARNG mandatory training requirements. System upgrades will begin late March 2009.

Known as Combat Skills Marksmanship Trainers (CSMTs), the systems feature small-arms training courseware geared to the Guard's homeland security missions. Fully immersive training scenarios significantly enhance readiness and deployability, helping soldiers improve weapons-handling, command skills and judgment in the face of contemporary and often complex tactical threats. Small unit leaders use the CSMT to rehearse mission planning.

While the range of simulated defensive and offensive situations covers security operations, fire and maneuver scenarios and hostage and clearing operations in urban areas, the CSMT's embedded authoring software enables instructors to design new scenarios quickly to reflect emerging doctrinal and mission changes.

Rich Haddad, President of Meggitt Training Systems commented, "Our longstanding relationship with the US Army National Guard and their latest investment in our training systems highlights our ability to respond effectively to evolving training requirements, including the unique needs of the National Guard."
